Inspired by W. B. Yeat’s ‘A Coat’
I made my life a coat
Just like you and everybody else
We wear it to the gallery
Oh, believe me, it’s a must!
In every schemed ceremony
At each half-attentive gathering
It shines and shimmers
With all its jewellery substitutes
The pearls slew his eyes
The rubies catch her throat
It is a heavy coat
Covered with the most delicate pretence
When I cast off my coat
Like a snake casts off its colourful skin
How I wish I hadn’t learnt all the skills to weave
But, I’ve already lost the sense of naked innocence
